This position has an initial appointment of one year, with a possibility of renewal.

Location - This role is in-person. Work primarily takes place at North Campus, Edmonton.

Reporting to the Lead Psychologist, Office of Advocacy and Wellbeing, the Registered Psychologist (OAW) is responsible for providing effective and efficient professional psychological services to the undergraduate (Medicine, Dentistry, Dental Hygiene, Med Lab Science, Radiation Therapy), graduate, and postgraduate (Residents and Fellows) learners in the University of Alberta Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry (FoMD).The primary focus of this position is the direct provision of clinical care (e.g., intake assessment, individual counselling, etc.) for learners experiencing personal, academic, or professional difficulties. The incumbent operates within the ethical codes of the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) to support learner wellbeing, resilience, and academic success. This position requires flexibility in scheduling, including some late afternoon/evening availability to meet student needs outside classroom and clinical placements.

Responsibilities

• Provide high-quality, confidential individual and group psychological counseling to learners in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, managing a diverse caseload through both in-person and telehealth modalities.
• Offer limited urgent client care appointments to support learners in acute distress and effectively manage situations involving risk of harm to self or others.
• Connect students to community resources and other healthcare providers as needed, particularly in cases where additional assessment or specialized care is required.
• Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential clinical records in accordance with legislation, CAP Standards of Practice, and University standards.
• Participate in regular case consultations and staff meetings to discuss complex cases, ethical dilemmas, and service efficiencies with the OAW Mental Health team and leadership.
• Support broader wellness initiatives by developing psychoeducational workshops, creating resource materials, and providing input on strategic planning and program evaluation.

Qualifications

Minimum

• Master’s degree in Counselling or Clinical Psychology.
• Registration in good standing with the College of Alberta Psychologists.
• 3 to 5 years of professional counselling experience working with a diversity of mental health challenges and populations. Equivalent combinations of education, training, and relevant experience may be considered.
• Proficiency in evidence-based therapeutic modalities with experience in crisis intervention and suicide risk assessment.
• Ability to both establish rapport with a diversity of clients. Engage with cultural humility when integrating diverse learners’ bio-psycho-social-spiritual experience and identity into counselling and treatment planning.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as proficiency in computing systems like Microsoft Office products, GSuite, electronic scheduling systems, telehealth systems, etc.
• Strong understanding of the legislation and ethical guidelines that guide clinical practice (e.g., Health Professions Act, Health Information Act, Protection of Privacy Act, CAP Standards of Practice and Practice Guidelines, CPA Code of Ethics).

Preferred Qualifications

• Doctoral degree in Counselling Psychology or Clinical Psychology.
• Knowledge of the University of Alberta and FoMD and its policies and procedures, community resources, and the ability to refer clients to those resources as required.
• Knowledge and familiarity with relevant organizations such as Physician & Family Support Program, Alberta Medical Association, and the Canadian Medical Protective Association.
• Awareness of national mental health initiatives and programs in addressing medical learner distress and burnout.
• Ability to perform quantitative and qualitative research and carry out program development, delivery and/or evaluations.

This position offers a pro-rated salary range of $37,627.50 to $62,479.50. A pro-rated market supplement in the amount of $6,458.50 (0.5 FTE of $12,917) will be added to the annual salary. This position is not eligible for benefits.
